SYNOPSIS
Set against the backdrop of the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City, Intolerance is Still There revisits the night when members of the LGBTI+ community—long criminalized and surveilled—rose in spontaneous defiance against a police raid at the Stonewall Inn. This moment, raw and ungoverned, ignited the modern queer liberation movement and marked a pivotal shift in public resistance.
The film’s cast is composed entirely of individuals from the LGTBQI+ community—artists, performers, and activists—whose lived experiences and political work deeply inform each gesture, each look, each breath on screen. Their presence is not symbolic; it is material and necessary. Through them, the film becomes an act of embodied memory and radical solidarity.
Interweaving documentary impulse with speculative fiction and digital resurrection, Intolerance is Still There brings the past into dialogue with the present through the spectral figure of Julio Zúñiga, a young Mexican footballer and LGBTQI+ rights advocate murdered in 2017 in a hate crime. Though he never lived the events at Stonewall, and was not present at the film’s production, Zúñiga appears via face-replacement and 3D reconstruction—reanimated to walk alongside those resisting on that historic night.
This digital gesture does not attempt to erase death, but to stage an impossible reunion—a folding of time to reveal a continuous, global arc of queer resistance. The result is a layered meditation on the violence of systemic intolerance, the resilience of marginalized communities, and the urgent need for collective memory.
Shot with stripped-down precision and atmospheric tension, Intolerance is Still There is both a lament and a manifesto: a visually driven inquiry into visibility, erasure, and the unfinished struggle for dignity. The past remains present. The fight remains ours.
